Vocabulary:
Pattern: A design created by the repetition of a motif in a predictable or regular way.
Motif: An individual element, subject, or design that is repeated.
Accordion Fold: a back and forth fold that creates a zig zag folded paper
1.Using a 4"x 24" paper, have the students fold the paper in half, matching corners and then run their hand down finally CREASING the paper.
2. Fold the paper 2 more times to create a 3"x 4" block.
3. Open the paper completely and accordion fold the paper
Have students identify the shapes they know. These are typically geometric shapes
Have students name lines they know
Demonstrate motif (the basic component of a pattern)
Demonstrate how a line/shape pattern are created
Give a pattern have them identify the motif.
Give a motif and have student continue the pattern
Students will one
