An art critique is a way to look at a piece of art and think about what works and what does not work in the piece. When a problem is identified, the artist must decide how to fix the piece, incorporate the problem into the piece, or if starting over is a good option.
When engaging in critique of other people's art the most important thing is to be constructive with the negatives. Help the artist identify what the problems are and help them find solutions, at the same time offering praise for what is working and why it is successful.
When one is engaging good critique interaction, attention must be paid to the tone and tenor and word choice to ensure that the feelings of the artist are not hurt and they want to continue to make artwork. Confidence is fragile and growth is important.
A critique will focus on 4 aspects :
:: what we can see in the artwork
:: the materials the artist has used
:: the colours the artist has used
:: what patterns, lines, shapes, and textures we can see
To analyse a work of art we can think about how it is put together as a complete creation. We can talk about:
:: the composition of the art work
:: what’s in the foreground, middle ground, and background
:: whether it is symmetrical or asymmetrical
:: what sizes and placement of items can we see
:: how different parts of the art work relate to each other
To interpret a work of art, think about how the piece makes you feel and what it makes you think about. We might talk about:
:: if the art works reminds us of anything in our own life
:: what title you would give the art work
:: if the art work relates to any other area you have learnt about: a book you’ve read, a film you’ve seen, an event that’s happened
Finally, we can make our own judgement on the work of art and decide if we like it or not. We can talk about:
:: which aspects of the artwork we think are a success and which are not
:: how the artwork compares to other works
:: if we think the art work shows us something original
