Approximately 500,000 American bison (often called buffalo) exist today in the U.S., with another 160,000+ in Canada
Around 200 years ago, at the start of the 19th century, the American bison population was massive, estimated to be between 30 to 60 million animals roaming North America's Great Plains, a stark contrast to the near extinction by the 1890s, when only a few hundred survived before conservation efforts began.
